Newcastle transfer news: Ryan Fraser could leave in January

The January transfer window is on the horizon, and a new report has claimed that Ryan Fraser could leave Newcastle United in early 2023.

The focus from Toon fans has often been on incomings since the change of ownership, with major names such as Bruno Guimaraes and Kieran Trippier joining the club.

But there have been plenty of outgoings too, with the likes of Dwight Gayle, Isaac Hayden and Federico Fernandez departing.

Now the next transfer window is right around the corner, and while supporters are dreaming of a major arrival like James Maddison, speculation is starting on who could leave St James’ Park.

It has already been reported that Matt Ritchie could be on his way out, and now the same goes for Fraser.

Fraser could leave Newcastle with interest growing

According to the Chronicle, the former Bournemouth winger is attracting interest from Premier League and Championship clubs down south. They add that he is another player who Eddie Howe could let go alongside Ritchie.

While Newcastle have been flying this season, it has not been a bright campaign for Fraser. The 28-year-old has struggled for minutes, only starting three games in the Premier League.

The last time he was named in the starting XI was September 17th – the 1-1 draw with Bournemouth at St James’ Park. Since then, the Magpies have won every Premier League game bar one.

Newcastle’s sensational form has coincided with Fraser missing out, despite becoming an important player last season. He was brilliant at the start of 2022, shining with Kieran Trippier behind him. The Scotland international then continued his form after Trippier’s injury, and was ‘excellent‘ in a 1-1 draw with West Ham according to Howe.

However, Fraser has has now been replaced by Miguel Almiron down the right.

Whether he leaves or not will surely depend on someone else coming in. While Fraser has been limited to eight Premier League appearances, it would be a surprise for Howe to let him go without signing a replacement first, especially given Newcastle’s lack of options out wide.

It may depend on what Fraser wants. Obviously playing for Newcastle is great right now, and he will likely be keen to fight for his place. But with more investment expected and the improvement of Almiron, Fraser might struggle to see a way back into the Toon starting XI.

Therefore, a January move away might be a good option.
