According to Bayern Munich legend Lothar Matthaus, Newcastle United made a big money offer for Niklas Sule.
The centre-back was linked with a move to St James’ Park shortly after the takeover went through. In November, Newcastle World claimed that the Magpies had opened talks with Sule, who was open to a move to the North East.
However, it was then reported in Germany last month that the 26-year-old instead wanted to join a team that regularly challenges for titles and competes in the Premier League. At the time, we were sitting in the relegation zone…

These reports seemed strange, and didn’t make much sense. Why was he initially keen on a Newcastle move if he wanted to be playing European football and challenging for trophies?
It felt like the Magpies were being used, with the Champions League winner looking to secure a move away from Bayern Munich where his contract expires in the summer.
Sule has now done that, but he won’t be joining Newcastle. Instead, he’s agreed a deal to join Borussia Dortmund at the end of the season.
However, PIF did apparently make a move for the big defender if Matthaus is to be believed.

Newcastle one of two English teams to make Niklas Sule offer
Matthaus spoke to German outlet Sport1 on Monday, and discussed Sule’s move away from Bayern.
“It was never about the money,” he said.
“He had two offers from England, one from Newcastle, where he could have made a lot of money. He didn’t feel supported by the club [Bayern]. He was left out in the rain, other players were given more support.”
With Sule’s contract expiring, Newcastle might have felt he was a player they could attract to St James’ Park.

Convincing players to join doesn’t seem to have been an issue in January – the main problem was convincing teams to sell.
But despite Newcastle’s offer, Sule is going elsewhere. He’ll be staying in the Bundesliga, hoping to end the Bayern dominance at Dortmund.
But the fact PIF made a big money offer shows their ambition. They want to bring the best players to the North East, and are willing to pay big bucks to do just that.
Some big names did arrive in January – Kieran Trippier and Bruno Guimaraes. Expect more big transfers in the summer if we survive in the Premier League.
