With Champions League football a realistic possibility for Newcastle United next season, it’s going to be fascinating to see who arrives this summer.

Eddie Howe’s side look on course for a top four finish this season and entry to Europe’s elite competition could send their transfer plans into a new stratosphere.

Indeed, Chelsea and England star Mason Mount has been linked with a move to St James’ Park.

The 24-year-old is coming towards the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge and has also been touted as a potential target for Liverpool.

Still, according to the Evening Standard, Anfield might not be Mount’s destination this summer.

While it’s understood the midfielder will be sold should he fail to agree a new contract with his boyhood club, nothing is yet to decided as to his future.

The player’s father Tony is said to have enlisted the help of the ROOF agency and Neil Fewings, who represents Jordan Henderson and Virgil van Dijk.

Though that is obviously interesting given the links with Liverpool, it seems little is certain about Mount’s future at this stage.

Would Mason Mount be a good signing for Newcastle?

Absolutely.

Though the midfielder has proven something of a decisive figure throughout his career, he would be a major coup for Newcastle.

Hailed as having the ability to become “world class” Jody Morris, Mount registered double figures for both goals and assists for Chelsea from a midfield position last season. Given the lack of goals in this Newcastle team, that seems like an obvious upgrade.

A major force in Chelsea’s Champions League win and regularly trusted by England manager Gareth Southgate, Mount would bring a raft of elite experience with him to St James’ Park.

With nothing yet decided on his future, Newcastle have to be alert.
