Newcastle United have reportedly been trying to sign Kylan Midwood, but are set to miss out to Manchester City.
That is according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, who believes that the Sheffield United teenager has agreed a move to the Premier League champions.
Midwood currently plays for Sheffield United’s Under-15s side, but did recently play for the Blades at Under-17s level, highlighting his immense ability for someone so young.
That is why he has been attracting interest from top clubs from all over England, including Newcastle.
Romano believes that Newcastle, Liverpool, Chelsea and Leeds were all in contention to sign Midwood. However, he is off to the Etihad to join Manchester City’s youth setup.

It will be interesting to see if Midwood develops into a first-team player under Pep Guardiola, but Newcastle’s interest is further proof of the desire to improve the club’s academy.
Man City signing Kylan Midwood but at least Newcastle were in contention
The only consolation is that Newcastle had their finger on the pulse to be able to try and make this deal happen. That probably would not have been the case in years gone by.
Instead, it would be players leaving the Toon academy rather than joining it. Take Bobby Clark for example. He left for Liverpool, and has already made his Premier League debut.
That would not be allowed to happen now, with the new ownership looking to improve Newcastle at every level.
That includes the academy, with Dan Ashworth tasked with creating an environment where young players can develop and graduate into the first-team.
We have already seen various youth additions since Ashworth became Sporting Director. We have signed players who we might not see in the first-team for years.
Alex Murphy has signed from Ireland, while Jude Smith and Charlie McArthur have come from Scotland. And in January we are getting the Australian sensation Garang Kuol.
Midwood would have been an even younger addition, but he is off to Manchester City instead. But as Newcastle continue to grow and build, it hopefully won’t be long before we are winning these transfer tussles.
