Newcastle United are reportedly tracking FC Koln defender Timo Hubers ahead of the summer transfer window.

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are one of several Premier League clubs in the mix to sign the highly rated German.

The 25-year-old has been enjoying a positive season over in the Bundesliga, making 15 appearances so far.

He’s helped the club reach eighth place with six games left to play.

The centre-half will enter into the final year of his contract this summer. And so, it’s very possible he could be sold before his value drops further.

Hubers’ form hasn’t just alerted Newcastle though.

The Mail say Leeds United, West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Southampton are all keen.

And current Championship out Fulham, who will become a top-flight club again later this year, have also expressed interest.

It has been quite a recent rise for Hubers.

He’s only been with Koln since last year when he joined from Hannover after helping them achieve promotion to the Bundesliga.

Now, he’s the envy of a number of English teams and it remains to be seen if anyone launches a successful pursuit.

Koln are said to value the star at around £6 million, which is certainly an appealing price tag.

Timo Hubers would be a slight risk, but £6 million could be worth it for Newcastle

Hubers has been with Hannover and Koln so far in his career.

This would be a big step up for him, but the star has really progressed this season after initially starting the campaign out of the side.

He would not come in at Newcastle as the marquee centre-back signing, but perhaps a solid squad option.

He would represent a slight risk, but £6 million is not much to pay at all in today’s market.

Newcastle should definitely keep a close eye on the ball-playing defender.
