Newcastle transfer news: Magpies to bid for Maximo Perrone

Newcastle United are reportedly going to launch a bid for teenage midfielder Maximo Perrone in the coming days.

That is according to Velez Y Su Mundo reporter Agustin Sileo, who claims that the Magpies are about to make their move for the 19-year-old sensation.

Perrone is the latest young player to be linked with a move to St James’ Park. There is a clear effort from the club to snap up teenage talent that can develop into first-team stars.

We already saw Dan Ashworth bring in some fresh faces during the summer, with the likes of Alex Murphy and Jude Smith joining the club. And in January we will see Australian wonderkid Garang Kuol officially become a Magpie.

It was recently claimed that South America is the next market Newcastle want to tap into, with various players from Brazil rumoured to be Toon targets.

Now it’s an Argentinian midfielder, and Perrone sounds like a very exciting prospect.

Newcastle to bid for ‘spectacular’ Maximo Perrone

Perrone is 19-years-old, and turns 20 in January. He currently plays for Velez Sarsfield in Argentina, and has played for his country at Under-16 and Under-20 level.

He is a centre-midfielder, and has been described as a ‘deep lying playmaker‘ by Goal. That is a position Newcastle need to improve in, with Bruno Guimaraes currently holding down that position. However, he is better used higher up the pitch.

Jonjo Shelvey was Newcastle’s main ‘number six’ last season, but he is now 30-years-old. Signing Perrone could give us his long-term replacement.

While he is only 19, Perrone is very highly rated. When he was just 17, he was being praised to the moon and back by then-manager Gabriel Heinze.

The former Manchester United defender called Perrone ‘spectacular‘, and was already considering calling him up to the first-team at that point despite his tender age.

Now he is a regular for Velez, and helped them reach the quarter finals of this year’s Copa Libertadores. They were then beaten in the semis by eventual champions Flamengo.

But Perrone is already excelling at senior level, and could now be on his way to Europe. A move feels like it could be on the horizon, as he enters the final year of his contract at Velez.

His current deal expires in December 2023, and it includes a release clause of just £8.8million. Given his potential, that could make him a bargain signing for Newcastle.

This is one to watch.
