Newcastle United are preparing for a busy summer transfer window, as the club’s scouts cast their eyes over possible signings – such as Florian Wirtz.
It has recently been claimed that Newcastle like Wirtz, the Bayer Leverkusen playmaker who is excelling in Germany after recovering from a serious knee injury.
The 19-year-old is an incredible talent, and would be a sensational signing for Eddie Howe – especially if we are playing Champions League football next season.
Wirtz appears to be a player of interest to Newcastle, who have travelled to Germany to get a closer look at the creative midfielder.
Newcastle scout Florian Wirtz
According to the Daily Mail, Newcastle scouts watched Wirtz compete in the Europa League last Thursday night. They saw him score for Bayer Leverkusen in a 1-1 draw with Union Saint Gilloise.

The report adds that Toon officials also watched Wirtz on Sunday. He started on the bench at the weekend, but played the final 22 minutes away from home against Wolfsburg.
Newcastle will have been impressed with what they saw from Wirtz in the Europa League, as he netted his fourth goal of the season. He also has eight assists, which is very impressive considering he was injured for the first half of the campaign.
His goal against Union Saint Gilloise was a crucial one, and won him praise from teammate Robert Andrich.
He told Sport1: “Florian is very, very important for us. Especially when he decides the games with such situations.”
That is what Newcastle are looking for – someone who can be decisive in the final third from midfield. It is something we do not really have at the moment, with our current midfielders proving to be inconsistent in front of goal.
Wirtz would be a transformative signing, and would perhaps even be a better addition than James Maddison, who would fulfil a similar role in the Toon squad. Wirtz is younger and has a lot more potential – he could go on to become a world class superstar.
That is why Leverkusen want to keep him, and why Newcastle might struggle to do a deal. But at least we are showing an interest.
