According to Sun reporter Alan Nixon, Newcastle have made an enquiry for Brighton’s Adam Webster.

The Magpies’ search for a defender is going into overdrive this week, with the end of the transfer window looming large.

It’s been evident for a long time that Newcastle need at least one new centre-back, but the new Toon owners have so far been unable to bring one to St James’ Park.

It hasn’t been for lack of trying, with moves for Sven Botman and Diego Carlos proving to be unsuccessful.

That has forced Newcastle to look elsewhere, and a new name in the frame is Adam Webster. The Brighton centre-back is 27-years-old, and joined the Seagulls in 2019 for £20million from Bristol City.

Adam Webster would suit Newcastle, but surely there’s no chance

Newcastle United are getting desperate in their search for a centre-back. The new owners are finding it incredibly difficult to bring in a new central defender.

Webster joins a long list of targets, and he’s another player who would fit in brilliantly at St James’ Park.

The 27-year-old is having a brilliant campaign with Brighton, who are ninth in the league after only losing four games all season.

Graham Potter has the Seagulls playing a wonderful brand of football, with every player comfortable on the ball as they look to build from the back.

Webster is no exception, and recently received some high praise from Sky Sports Jamie Carragher.

The former Liverpool defender wrote on Twitter last week: “Adam Webster’s passing out from the back, with both feet is better than any other English central defender.”

That is some statement from Carragher. While what he’s said is up for debate, you can’t doubt Webster’s passing ability for a defender. He might not be England’s best, but he’s certainly better than what Newcastle have got.

Eddie Howe wants his central defenders to be comfortable on the ball. However, that largely isn’t the case at Newcastle – bar Fabian Schar.

Webster would be a huge improvement, and his Premier League experience would make him a wonderful addition for the Magpies.

However, there’s no chance of this deal happening. Firstly, Brighton aren’t going to want to sell midway through the season. Secondly, even if they did they’d ask for an astronomical fee.

Newcastle can ask Brighton all they want, but there’s no way we’ll see Webster in a black and white shirt this month.
