Newcastle transfer news: Magpies interested in signing Solly March

Newcastle United are reportedly keen on bringing Solly March to the club from Brighton and Hove Albion.

That is according to 90min, who claim that Eddie Howe and Dan Ashworth are both interested in signing the in-form midfielder.

March has been playing brilliantly since the World Cup break ended, with his performances helping Brighton into seventh. The 28-year-old was outstanding on Saturday in the 3-0 win over Liverpool, scoring twice.

The Seagulls’ number seven now has four goals and three assists in all competitions since Boxing Day. In total, he has nine goal contributions in 21 appearances.

That form has reportedly convinced Brighton to try and extend March’s contract. His current deal expires in the summer of 2024.

They will also look to hand him a new contract to thwart off any interest from Premier League clubs, including Newcastle.

A move to St James’ Park would see March reunited with a former teammate in Dan Burn, and a player he clashed with at the start of the season.

Solly March and Joelinton collided when Newcastle drew 0-0 with Brighton

Newcastle and Brighton have met once this season, drawing 0-0 at the Amex Stadium back in August. It was a baking hot afternoon on the south coast, and Eddie Howe’s side were lucky to travel back up north with a point.

Brighton, then managed by Graham Potter, really should have won, with Nick Pope producing a wonderous performance to keep a clean sheet.

The Toon stopper also had to rely on Kieran Trippier, who cleared an effort from March off the line.

March was at the heart of the action for Brighton, and got embroiled in an altercation with Newcastle midfielder Joelinton.

The pair collided in the corner midway through the second half, as March tried to win a corner for his team. As the ball went out of play, the two players then went at it, with Joelinton and March pushing each other until their teammates rushed over. The coming together ended with a booking each and a handshake.

Fast forward five months and Newcastle are being linked with a move for March. Given his performances this season, he would certainly be a decent addition to Howe’s attack.

However, given that he is the same age as Leandro Trossard at 28, it would be a surprise to see Newcastle make a move after recent claims that the club had rejected the Belgian winger as they pursued younger targets.
