Newcastle United have reportedly been looking at Florian Neuhaus as they search for a new centre midfielder.

It is well documented that Eddie Howe wants to add a midfielder to his Newcastle squad ahead of next season, after failing to get one in January.

There were rumours about Youri Tielemans, Moises Caicedo and Conor Gallagher, but the Magpies ended the January transfer window with fewer midfield options than they started it with. That was due to Jonjo Shelvey’s move to Nottingham Forest.

Newcastle will be looking to replace Shelvey ahead of next season, and Borussia Monchengladbach’s Florian Neuhaus is a player who Toon officials have cast their eye over.

According to 90min, Newcastle are one of multiple Premier League clubs that have scouted Neuhaus ahead of the summer transfer window. They add that Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City have also looked at the 26-year-old.

However, 90min state that the aforementioned clubs are yet to decide if the midfielder is going to be a target.

In contrast, Liverpool are interested. 90min believe that they want to sign the Germany international as they eye a midfield rebuild after a disappointing season.

Ironically, they missed out on the chance to sign Neuhaus two years ago.

He was heavily linked with Liverpool two years ago

Jurgen Klopp was looking for a replacement for Georginio Wijnaldum in the summer of 2021, and appeared to identify Neuhaus as a possible candidate.

He was heavily linked with a move to Anfield, with reports claiming that he was very keen on swapping Monchengladbach for Liverpool.

Neuhaus was set to be available for £34million, until the Bundesliga side lowered their asking price. It was reported that they suddenly only wanted £21million for him, but Liverpool decided not to make a move.

They snubbed the chance to sign Neuhaus, and are now considering whether or not to rectify that mistake this summer. The Reds might have competition though, with various Premier League clubs tracking his progress.

90min do not believe that Neuhaus is a target for Newcastle yet, but it is clear to see why the Magpies have been taking a look. He reads the game well and protects the defence, while he is capable of moving the ball through the thirds with his desire to retain possession.

He has the attributes that Newcastle are looking for in a midfielder, but it remains unknown whether it will result in a formal move.
