Newcastle United are reportedly interested in signing Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace this summer.

That’s according to the Sun, who claim the Magpies are willing to pay £45million for the 23-year-old. That would make him the club’s record signing, more than the £42million Bruno Guimaraes could cost.

The report adds that Newcastle are confident of a deal, just weeks after seeing a loan move for the talented youngster fail.

The Sun state that Eddie Howe’s side tried to sign Eze in January, offering £5million to loan him for the rest of the season before paying another £35million to make the deal permanent.

He would’ve been another exciting January addition, and could have been the attacker our squad appears to be lacking. Newcastle tried and failed to sign Hugo Ekitike and then Jesse Lingard on deadline day, leaving us light in the final third.

On the face of it, this would be an incredibly exciting deal. Eze is a young player with stacks of potential. When he was still at QPR, Toon legend Les Ferdinand said: “When I see some of the things he does on a football and how comfortable he is on a football, I put him up there as one of the best I have seen.”

Eze has only played five times for Palace this season in the Premier League. He’s started just once and is yet to taste victory, while he’s provided zero goals and assists.

But last season he was fantastic as he made his top flight debut. He cost £17million from QPR, and provided four goals and six assists for the Eagles. Eze was sensational at times, relieving the pressure off of Wilfried Zaha’s shoulders at Selhurst Park.

However, his season ended early due to injury. The attacking midfielder ruptured his Achilles tendon in a training session, ruling him out for six months.

It was heartbreaking for Eze, who was set to be included in Gareth Southgate’s provisional England squad for Euro 2020.

He’s back now, but we’re yet to see Eze show the form of last season. If he can prove his fitness and shine in the Premier League once again, he’s definitely a player Newcastle should target in the summer – if we avoid relegation.
