Newcastle United have missed out on signing James Maddison in the previous two transfer windows, and are going to try again in the summer.
According to 90min, Maddison is Newcastle‘s top target heading into the summer transfer window. They add that the Magpies are confident that they can finally bring him to St James’ Park.
Maddison is one of the Premier League’s best attacking midfielders, and it looks like he could be on the move at the end of the season. His current Leicester contract expires in the summer of 2024, meaning time is running out for the Foxes to either cash in or tie him down to a new deal.
It has been reported that Brendan Rodgers is trying to get Maddison to sign a new contract, but that is yet to happen.
The closer we get to the summer with no new contract, the more likely it is that he leaves the King Power Stadium. And Newcastle believe he is on his way to Tyneside.
Newcastle confident they will finally sign James Maddison
90min believe Newcastle are confident they will sign Maddison, and it is a deal that will have been a year in the making.
He emerged as a target last summer, with the Magpies desperately scouring the market for attacking reinforcements. Dan Ashworth turned to Maddison, and had two bids rejected for the England international.
Newcastle weren’t put off, and Maddison was once again a target in January. But, once again, a move failed to come to fruition.
Now we are heading into the 2023 summer transfer window, and Newcastle hope it will be third time lucky for them.
The 26-year-old would massively improve Eddie Howe’s squad. He is a creative force in midfield, and has been exceptional for Leicester this season. Maddison has nine goals and five assists so far, and has been described as ‘outstanding‘ by Rodgers.
Newcastle need someone like him in midfield. We have proven this season that we struggle to break down stubborn defences, as was the case at Wembley for the Carabao Cup final.
Maddison is the type of player who could have enhanced our chances in the cup final, and hopefully Newcastle’s confidence in signing him ahead of next season is not misplaced.
