James Tarkowski reportedly wants to join Newcastle United this month.

According to journalist Luke Edwards, the Burnley central defender is ready to swap Turf Moor for St. James’ Park, which would bring to an end a six-year spell with the Clarets.

The former Brentford and Oldham Athletic man is out of contract at the end of the season.

Burnley have tried to tie him down to a new contract.

But he has refused all offers put to him, and it seems he is ready for a new chapter.

It now remains to be seen if Burnley will be willing to sell before he walks away as a free agent.

Doing so would potentially really damage their own Premier League survival bid, while strengthening Newcastle’s.

Edwards does add that Burnley are very reluctant to sell. Likely, they see much greater value in keeping him around for the rest of the season than what they would receive for a potential sale.

James Tarkowski would be a fantastic signing for Newcastle and weaken Burnley too

Newcastle should take heart from this information, and now apply some real pressure on Burnley.

Burnley obviously don’t want to sell, but the Magpies have the money to poach him.

If Newcastle can get this deal over the line it will be very significant.

Not only do Newcastle become much stronger for having Tarkowski patrolling their backline, Burnley – a relegation rival – get much weaker.

Sealing a move for the £50,000-a-week star could be an extremely smart move.
