Newcastle United could be involved in a transfer tussle for Liverpool’s Joe Gomez this summer.

The Magpies were mentioned as a possible destination for Gomez in a recent article on the Athletic. They stated that Newcastle and Aston Villa would be near the front of the queue if the defender became available this summer.

And it looks like Gomez is keen to leave Anfield when the transfer window opens.

According to 90min, the Reds defender wants to leave this summer. The report states that he is hoping Liverpool allow him to depart, as he aims to go to the World Cup with England in the winter. Gomez has 11 international caps, but has never appeared at a major tournament.

While Liverpool are having a wonderful season and challenging on all fronts, Gomez has barely featured. The 24-year-old has started just once in the Premier League, while he didn’t even make the bench for the recent Carabao Cup final.

With just 14 appearances in all competitions so far, it’s no wonder he’s keen to restart his career elsewhere.

Multiple clubs reportedly eyeing Joe Gomez – including Newcastle

The same report from 90min names multiple Premier League clubs that are interested in signing Gomez.

They name four clubs with the ‘biggest’ interest – Leicester, Tottenham, West Ham and Newcastle United.

It’s no surprise to see Eddie Howe’s side on that list. We’ve been linked with anyone and everyone ever since the club was taken over in October last year.

But rumoured interest in Gomez makes sense. Howe tried desperately to boost his centre-back options in January, with attempted moves for both Sven Botman and Diego Carlos.

In the end, neither arrived. Dan Burn was the only centre-back to join the club, and he has been exceptional since his £13million move.

But it seems likely that at least one more centre-back will be targeted in the summer. And Gomez ticks a lot of boxes.

At 24 he’s still very young. He’s got a lot of Premier League experience despite his age. He’s English, which is always a bonus when you need to pick so many homegrown players in your 25-man squad. He can play out from the back, which is what Howe wants from his defenders. And he has experience of winning trophies.

Providing his fitness woes are behind him, a summer move for Gomez would make a lot of sense for Newcastle United.
