Jason Knight is reportedly on the verge of leaving Derby County, with Newcastle United ‘watching developments closely’.

The Times say the midfielder is set to depart Pride Park this month, with the club facing pressure to sell their valuable assets or face further points deductions.

Supposedly, Knight would be available for purchase at around £8 million.

Leeds United and Burnley are understood to be considering tabling bids.

But Newcastle are also mentioned in the report. Apparently the Magpies are interested in the star, who has been one of the Rams’ best players in what’s been a difficult season.

Knight, a full Republic of Ireland international, has been tipped for a big future in the game.

Derby manager Wayne Rooney has previously said that Knight reminds him of himself when he was a young player.

He told Rams TV: “He almost reminds me of myself when I was younger in terms of no fear. And he’s got an aggression about him, not in terms of how he’s tackling, but in terms of how he runs, how he gets about the pitch.”

Newcastle are currently trying to strengthen in several positions.

Centre-back is the priority at the moment. It is expected a couple of new faces at least will be arriving this coming week.

But Newcastle’s midfield also leaves a lot to be desired. Knight may well be someone Newcastle feel can make the step up and improve the engine room.

Newcastle landing Jason Knight would be a risk, but moving for him makes sense

Newcastle ideally need to be getting players in who have experience. Preferably in the Premier League.

But Knight is a young player with big potential, and he has been shining regularly for Derby this term.

Rooney has previously claimed he is aggressive and shows energy and a good attitude.

So he may be a good addition to the squad.

In the potential event Newcastle are relegated to the Championship, Knight would be a good player to have in the ranks given he knows the league well.
