Newcastle United have reportedly considered Jan Bednarek as a possible signing this month.
According to a report from the Daily Mail yesterday, the Poland international has been mentioned by Magpies transfer officials.
Newcastle are facing an absolutely huge week this week.
Only a week remains in the transfer window, and Eddie Howe arguably needs at least three or four new faces.
A couple of new centre-backs are especially important, with Newcastle having conceded many goals are too easily this term.
It is thought Diego Carlos is the club’s main target at the moment.
But Newcastle are looking at many players, and it seems Southampton’s Bednarek has also been on their radar.
But the Mail’s report adds that he is now back in favour at St. Mary’s Stadium, after a ‘fall out’ before Christmas.
The 25-year-old has started the last three games for the Saints.
In total this term, he has made 20 appearances, and scored three goals.
The star has been with Southampton since 2017, joining from Lech Poznan.
Earlier this season, Alan Shearer selected Bednarek in his Premier League Team of the Week after he shone against Manchester City. He said (via Premier League): “The Poland defender handled everything Manchester City threw at him and made some heroic last-ditch blocks.”
Jan Bednarek to Newcastle is surely very unlikely
Bednarek moving to Newcastle this week would be a real shock.
The star is clearly an important member of Southampton’s first-team squad.
Southampton will not want to lose him. They are a club seeking to push towards the middle of the table. Offloading Bednarek would potentially see them head in the opposite direction.
That said, Burnley would not have wanted to lose Chris Wood. The striker ultimately joined Newcastle after the club had triggered his release clause.
Perhaps a similar situation could unfold with Bednarek.
