Newcastle transfer news: How the Magpies feel about signing Ruben Neves

Newcastle United are looking to sign a midfielder this summer, and are currently weighing up whether or not Ruben Neves is the man they need.

Neves was a rumoured target back in January, with the Daily Mail claiming he was on the Magpies’ radar. A move did not come to fruition, but they have since claimed that the 26-year-old is still an option for Newcastle.

Now the Athletic have provided an update on the situation, and given insight on how the Toon recruitment team view the Portugal international.

What Newcastle like about Ruben Neves

According to the Athletic, Newcastle admire Neves for two reasons. They like his passing range and shooting ability.

Those are the two qualities that make the former Porto man standout. He is best known for his wonder goals, scoring screamer after screamer from distance. That is something Newcastle could benefit from, as Howe’s side are often reluctant to try their luck from far out.

Neves’ technique from outside the box is extraordinary, and makes him a real weapon in and around the area. Newcastle almost fell victim to that on Sunday, but Neves’ radar was seemingly off when he was presented with shooting opportunities.

However, Nick Pope has seen firsthand just how good Neves is from distance. He fired a rocket past the England goalkeeper when Newcastle and Wolves drew 1-1 at Molineux back in August.

His passing ability is also impressive, and very reminiscent of Jonjo Shelvey’s. They are both capable of producing incredibly accurate long balls, which allows their team to switch the play quicker and attack from a different area of the pitch.

Toon recruitment team have one concern about Neves

But despite his shooting and passing, Newcastle aren’t fully sold on Neves, who cost Wolves £15.8million in 2017. The Athletic’s report adds that the Magpies do not believe he is as athletic as some of their other targets – and the Athletic know a thing or two about being ‘athletic’…

Terrible jokes aside, that must be a major concern for Howe. It is vital that his midfielders get around the pitch as it is essential to the pressing style that he has created.

All of Newcastle’s current midfielders are very mobile, and it is why they have been so successful. It is obviously important that we add something new to the side, but it must not deter our overall philosophy.

It is why the club distanced themselves from a January move for Jorginho, and athleticism could be what costs Neves a Toon transfer this summer.
