Newcastle transfer news: Fulham are interested in Jamaal Lascelles

Fulham reportedly want to sign Jamaal Lascelles from Newcastle this summer.

That’s according to the Chronicle’s Lee Ryder, who has named the newly promoted side as a possible suitor for the Magpies captain.

Nottingham Forest have also been linked, with the Athletic claiming that they’re looking at possibly re-signing their former player.

That means two out of three teams heading up to the Premier League next season are interested in the 28-year-old. All we need is a ‘Lascelles to Bournemouth’ rumour for a full house.

Nottingham Forest return would make more sense

Both Fulham and Forest will be hoping to survive in the top flight next season. The latter will be playing in the Premier League for the first time since 1999, while the former has become something of a yo-yo club in recent years.

The Cottagers are just like Norwich – too good for the Championship but not good enough for the Premier League. However, they do have money to spend, which could boost their survival bid if they get their recruitment right.

Targeting Lascelles is smart. He’s an established Premier League defender with experience of battling relegation. He’s a leader too, having captained Newcastle ever since Rafa Benitez gave him the armband in 2016.

His physical presence could really benefit either Fulham or Forest, with his Toon teammates Dan Burn and Ryan Fraser describing him as the strongest player at the club.

While Fulham may feel better positioned to survive in the top flight, a return to Forest perhaps makes more sense.

He came through their academy and belongs to the area. A chance to return home after might be difficult to pass up.

Lascelles leaving Newcastle feels unlikely despite Fulham interest

Realistically, it feels unlikely that Lascelles will leave Newcastle this summer.

We’re in the market for a left-sided centre-back, with Sven Botman the club’s number one target. If he signs, he’ll likely start alongside Fabian Schar.

That would leave Dan Burn and Lascelles in reserve, which is more than adequate enough backup.

The only way a Lascelles departure would feel more likely would be if the club brought in a second centre-back this summer. We speculated that Lascelles’ Toon career would be over if Merih Demiral had arrived when he was linked last week.

For now there is Premier League interest in the skipper, but no bid to take him away from St James’ Park.
