Newcastle transfer news: Eddie Howe will consider selling Paul Dummett

Newcastle United will reportedly consider selling Paul Dummett during the January transfer window.

That is according to ESPN, who believe that the local lad is one player who the Magpies could move on next month. The report states that Eddie Howe will consider getting rid of the defender if they receive an offer for him.

Dummett’s contract at St James’ Park is set to expire in the summer. He has already signed one extension since Howe took over, agreeing a new one-year deal back in May.

But with his contract winding down once again, it sounds like his time on Tyneside could be coming to an end. His Newcastle career could be over in January, but only if the Magpies receive an acceptable offer.

ESPN’s report adds that another caveat to players leaving will be whether or not it hinders the squad depth at the club. But losing Dummett would not be the biggest blow, as he is probably fourth choice left-back behind Dan Burn, Matt Targett and Jamal Lewis.

Dummett has never really got going under Howe at Newcastle

While a lot of players have improved under Howe, the same can’t be said for Dummett. He has barely featured since the change of manager.

He made three appearances last season, including starts against Watford and Leeds. Dummett played a total of 198 minutes last season, spending most of the second half of the campaign on the bench after Targett’s arrival.

Howe has spoke very highly of Dummett in the past. He called him a ‘massive‘ part of the club’s future at the start of the year, admitting that he ‘really’ likes him ‘as a lad’.

But that hasn’t led to more minutes this season. In fact, he’s playing less. Dummett has made one appearance during this remarkable start, playing the full 90 minutes in the League Cup win over Tranmere back in August.

The last time he featured in a matchday squad was in October when Newcastle beat Fulham 4-1. He was an unused substitute at Craven Cottage.

However, he has not been seen since due to a calf problem. And with talk that he could be sold in January, we may never see Dummett in a Toon shirt ever again.
