Midfielder Donny van de Beek has reportedly turned down a loan move to Newcastle United.
The Telegraph have reported today that the club approached the Netherlands international through intermediaries.
But the Magpies have been unsuccessful in their approach, with van de Beek declining a move due to the club’s position in the Premier League table.
As things stand, the former Ajax maestro is not willing to join. But the reports adds the situation is something Newcastle ‘could revisit’ later in the window.
Right now, arguably, Newcastle need to prioritise the signing of some central defenders.
The club have kept just one clean sheet in the Premier League this season, which is simply not good enough.
Diego Carlos seems to be the man linked the most at this moment in time. Newcastle have tabled three offers for the Brazilian so far.
van de Beek remains very much on the periphery at Manchester United since his £40 million transfer (total, BBC Sport) to Old Trafford.
The 24-year-old’s game time hasn’t really increased since the arrival of Ralf Rangnick.
Many are expecting him to depart this month, even if the manager has said he thinks he could stay put.
Newcastle should now abort plans to sign van de Beek following new claim
Newcastle should not be looking to go back in for van de Beek after this development.
If it is true he doesn’t want to join now, then it’s likely he won’t genuinely want to join closer to deadline day if he hasn’t managed to secure a move elsewhere.
His reported reasons are fair enough. He needs to do what is best for him, as he attempts to get back in favour with the Dutch national team.
But Newcastle desperately need to ensure the right players come. Specifically, players who have no qualms about coming in for a relegation scrap.
