Newcastle United could make a move for Chris Wood as they seek to cover the injury to Callum Wilson.
According to a report from the Telegraph today, the Magpies have made an approach for the New Zealand international.
The club apparently hope to sign him this week, with Wood supposedly open to joining.
Newcastle are said to be ready to intensify their efforts to land him.
The claim comes after it emerged Wilson could be looking at around eight weeks out with injury.
Wilson limped off in the recent draw with Manchester United, and supporters have been nervously awaiting information on his condition.
Eddie Howe delivered the news yesterday, and Newcastle are now primed to dip into the transfer window to address the issue.
Other names to have been linked with a move to St. James’ Park in recent days are Divock Origi, Eddie Nketiah and Sardar Azmoun.
Given the performance against Cambridge United yesterday, it is paramount someone comes in as soon as possible.
Wood has been with Burnley since 2017. He is a proven goalscorer at Premier League level having bagged 50 times in the competition.
Previously, Wood has stated that Toon legend Alan Shearer is a hero of his.
Speaking in 2017, he told Sky Sports News: “I wear No 9 – it’s the number I have always wanted to have.
“Alan Shearer is a hero of mine, he was a proper striker.”
Chris Wood would be a sensible signing by Newcastle
Wood might not be such a glamorous name. But there is no doubting he can score goals at Premier League level.
The star has been able to find the net fairly regularly in a team not really renowned for scoring goals.
Since moving to Burnley, he has scored at least 10 Premier League goals every season.
And in each of the last three Premier league campaigns, £50,000-a-week star Wood has been very available, making at least 32 appearances.
Newcastle need players to come in whom they can rely upon.
Newcastle, given the situation they are in, could do at lot worse than to sign Wood this month.
