Newcastle United could now be set to miss out on Andrey Santos, with Chelsea reportedly closing in on a deal to sign the Vasco da Gama teenager.

That is according to 90min, who claim that the Blues are confident they are going to complete a deal for the 18-year-old midfielder.

The report adds that Newcastle were close, but now Chelsea hope to reach a full agreement before the January transfer window opens, with an initial £12million deal set to be on the cards. 90min add that the fee could rise to £20million if certain clauses are met.

It was recently claimed that Graham Potter’s side had won the race to sign Santos, but that story was then dismissed. Now various outlets have claimed that Chelsea are winning the race to sign the youngster.

TalkSPORT believe that Chelsea are set to sign Santos, while The Times state that they are the favourites to secure his signature.

Nothing is official yet, but it is looking increasingly unlikely that Santos will be joining Newcastle United in January.

Newcastle will be gutted with Chelsea set to sign Andrey Santos

News of a potential move to Chelsea is a massive blow for Newcastle. Santos has an incredible amount of potential, and would have been a brilliant signing for the future.

Dan Ashworth is searching for young players who can go on to become stars at St James’ Park. He has already done one deal to sign Garang Kuol, and was eyeing another with Santos.

It was previously claimed that Newcastle were confident of a deal. But now it is Chelsea who have the confidence.

Todd Boehly will be delighted if this transfer is completed, as the Chelsea owner is also eyeing future stars. They have already brought in Omari Hutchinson and Carney Chukwuemeka since the American took over at Stamford Bridge.

Now Santos could be the next hot prospect through the door, leaving Newcastle to look elsewhere.

Toon fans will hold out hope that Newcastle aren’t out of the race just yet, but it isn’t looking promising. It could take something really special from Ashworth to resurrect this deal.

If he can’t, he will have to hope his talent spotting ability leads him to someone equally as special.
