Elliot Anderson was almost Newcastle United’s hero on Friday night, but he could be a Championship player next season.
Eddie Howe‘s side beat Nottingham Forest at the weekend, and it should have been Anderson who scored the winner for Newcastle. He powered home a second half header, only for it to be controversially ruled out for offside.
Since then, former referee Dermot Gallagher has ruled that the goal should have stood, while the youngster has received messages of support from his fellow teammates like Sean Longstaff.
Despite the disappointment, it was an impressive cameo from the 20-year-old, who was described as ‘unbelievable‘ by Kieran Trippier.
Elliot Anderson attracting Championship interest
According to the Athletic, multiple Championship clubs are interested in taking the Toon academy graduate on loan. However, Howe is yet to decide if he should sanction a short-term departure.

There is also interest from Scotland, although Toon fans will be reluctant to see Anderson head north of the border given Garang Kuol’s struggles – although that is not the fault of loan co-ordinator Shola Ameobi.
Different circumstances meant that a move to Hearts made sense for Kuol, who chose his own destination. However, more care will need to be taken with Anderson.
Big decision for Newcastle to make
This is a vital stage of his career. He is on the fringes of the Newcastle starting XI, and making an impression off the bench.
But it is clear that he still needs more senior experience. And whether he will get that at St James’ Park next season remains to be seen.

It might depend on what European competition the Magpies qualify for. A run in the Europa League or Conference League could be the perfect stage for Anderson to strut his stuff in a Toon shirt. However, Champions League qualification might complicate matters.
If Newcastle do decide to loan Anderson out to a Championship club, Howe and Dan Ashworth must think carefully about where to send him. It needs to be to a club where he will play regularly, in a style that is similar to Newcastle’s.
But with injuries mounting up and Anderson impressing at the City Ground, he might have a chance between now and the end of the season to prove that he doesn’t need another loan spell.
