Newcastle United have reportedly been monitoring William Saliba for the past 18 months.
According to a report from the Chronicle, the Magpies have been observing the player’s unhappy situation at Arsenal, and may look to finally act this summer.
Saliba is a loan target for Newcastle, who are in need of bolstering their defence this summer.
The Frenchman signed for the north London giants in the summer of 2019, but is yet to feature for their first-team having had two loan spells with Saint-Etienne and Nice.
He had an impressive 2020/21, and made the shortlist for Ligue 1 centre-back of the season alongside the likes of Marquinhos, Sven Botman and Presnel Kimpembe.
The Chronicle’s report actually states that Mikel Arteta would not stand in Saliba’s way if Newcastle did lodge a loan bid.
It’s also explained Saliba – who cost Arsenal £27 million (Sky Sports) – would be open to a departure, if it meant he could play in the Premier League.
Newcastle must put the wheels in motion
This information, if true, needs to prompt Newcastle into action.
Saliba clearly has big potential, and the Magpies absolutely need to freshen things up in central defence.
He had a strong finish to 2020/21, which is likely to mean other clubs will be expressing their interest.
It is therefore important for Newcastle to put the wheels in motion now if he is someone they really want.
