Newcastle transfer news: Alexandr Golovin keen on Newcastle move

Russia midfielder Alexandr Golovin is reportedly keen to join Newcastle United this month.

Russian outlet Meta Ratings reports the attacking midfielder is ‘actively interested’ in signing for the Magpies.

It’s added that Newcastle are ready to compete with Everton and West Ham United for the AS Monaco player.

The Ligue 1 side are aware of the interest from the three teams.

Newcastle fans may well remember Golovin’s name, as he was linked with a move to the club back in 2018 when he was a CSKA Moscow player (sports.ru).

Nothing materialised, and the 25-year-old instead sealed a £26.5 million move (Goal) to Monaco for what was a club-record fee.

It seems Golovin could now end up at St. James’ Park after all, with the Toon Army supposedly keen.

Eddie Howe is looking to drastically improve the level of quality in his squad, after an awful start to the 2021/22 season.

Newcastle have won just once all season, and are in dire need of new faces.

Kieran Trippier and Chris Wood have already signed which is a good start to the month.

But Howe needs at least a couple of new centre-backs as a matter of urgency. Diego Carlos is seemingly the man the Magpies are focusing on the most right now.

A new attacking midfielder would also not go amiss.

In 23 appearances so far this term, Golovin has scored three goals and made five assists.

Newcastle can probably do better than Alexandr Golovin

Golovin may be actively interested in joining Newcastle this month, but maybe the club should think twice about doing a deal.

The star has been with Monaco for a few years, but has arguably not pulled up trees during his time in France.

In 114 games he has scored 16 goals and made 22 assists. And previously for CSKA, he played 113 games and scored 13 goals and made 11 assists. Those are not particularly impressive numbers.

Newcastle need proven players given the serious threat of relegation.

Moving for Golovin might simply be too much of a risk. He has also had a couple of injuries this term, and has completed 90 minutes just three times.
