If Newcastle United can sign James Maddison this summer, they will be getting one of the ‘best’ players in the Premier League.

That is the view of Leicester boss Brendan Rodgers, who has heaped praise on the midfielder after the Foxes’ win over Tottenham on Saturday.

Maddison captained Leicester as they blew Spurs away, coming from behind to win 4-1 at the King Power Stadium. It was a sensational performance from the 26-year-old, who scored and provided an assist.

He now has 14 goal contributions from 16 Premier League games this season, and has been hailed by his manager.

“He [Maddison] was outstanding as captain,” he said.

“He’s one of the best players in the league and he has grown as a leader.

“He didn’t train a lot last week as he was managing an issue but he’s an outstanding player.”

It is very high praise from Rodgers, and it will be music to the ears of Newcastle United, who are going to try to sign Maddison during the summer transfer window.

Newcastle could sign ‘one of the best’ this summer

The Magpies have been heavily linked with signing Maddison since last summer. Dan Ashworth made two bids for the England international, but was unwilling to pay the £60million that Leicester wanted.

He was once again the club’s top target during January, but once again proved to be too expensive.

Now attentions have turned to the summer, and the Northern Echo recently claimed that Newcastle will make a renewed move for Maddison.

That will excite Toon supporters, as he is a top class player and the kind of midfield talent that we are missing right now. We struggle to break down stubborn defences, and Maddison has the ability to do just that.

He was extraordinary on Saturday against Spurs, and actually helped Newcastle’s bid to qualify for the Champions League with his performance.

Maddison’s efforts proved why Eddie Howe wants him at St James’ Park, while Rodgers’ words are also very encouraging. Aside from his ability with the ball, the Leicester boss says that Maddison is developing into a real leader.

That will enthuse Toon officials, as it sounds like he would be a great character to add to Howe’s squad, as well as an ‘outstanding’ player.
