Newcastle United have reportedly suffered a setback in their pursuit of Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
The youngster has been on loan at West Brom this season, who were officially relegated on Sunday after losing to Arsenal.
Despite going down, Gallagher has been one of the more impressive players at the Hawthorns this season.
It’s been his first taste of Premier League football, having been on loan at Swansea in the Championship the year prior.
The 21-year-old is yet to make a first-team appearance for his parent club Chelsea, but seemingly hopes to change that next season.
No Newcastle move for Gallagher?
According to the Sun, Gallagher intends to stay and fight for his place at Chelsea.
It’s a bold decision from the midfielder, who will have a lot of competition when he returns to Stamford Bridge. He could also be linking up with a Champions League-winning squad.
However, in recent years we have seen plenty of Chelsea youngsters break into the first team, unlike in the past.
But Gallagher’s stance is a blow for multiple Premier League teams, including Newcastle.
The Sun claim that the Magpies were interested in signing Gallagher this summer, either permanently or on loan. They also name Leeds and Crystal Palace as potential suitors.
But for now it looks like Gallagher will be staying at Stamford Bridge.
This isn’t the first time Newcastle have eyed a move for Gallagher. He was linked last summer by the Northern Echo before joining West Brom.
They missed out in 2020, and it looks like that could be the case in 2021 as well.
