Newcastle United may have missed out on more than just the Conference League on Saturday.
The Magpies needed Manchester City to do them a favour in the FA Cup final, but they came up short against their local rivals. Manchester United won 2-1 at Wembley to lift the cup, ending Newcastle United’s European dreams.
A Man City win would have put Eddie Howe‘s side in the Conference League, but now a seventh place finish in the Premier League means nothing. It is a bitter blow for the club and the fans, many of which had their passports ready for some exciting journeys.
Missing out means Toon fans and players will not be clocking up as many air miles, while it also could have an impact on the club’s summer transfer plans.
Newcastle United linked with signing La Liga goalkeeper
With Loris Karius due to be released and Martin Dubravka possibly being sold, Newcastle United are in the market for a new goalkeeper this summer.
Eddie Howe is looking to bring someone in who can compete with Nick Pope, with Valencia stopper Giorgi Mamardashvili an option.

He is a player that the Newcastle United manager really likes, amid speculation that Valencia would look for a fee in the region of £30million.
That is a lot of money, but a figure that the Magpies can afford. However, money might not suddenly be the issue.
Why Newcastle may no longer sign Giorgi Mamardashvili
That is because an update from Spanish outlet AS has casted doubt over whether Newcastle can actually tempt Mamardashvili to St James’ Park now.
According to AS, the 23-year-old goalkeeper wants to sign for a club that can offer him European football next season.
That would rule out Newcastle United, who are only preparing for domestic duties.
Newcastle could be forced to look elsewhere for Nick Pope competition
If that is the case then the Magpies will need to look elsewhere. It looks like signing a goalkeeper is going to be vital ahead of next season, but suddenly a deal for Mamardashvili could be off the table.
Instead, Howe may have to look elsewhere. Another target is Aaron Ramsdale, and the Arsenal understudy always did feel a bit more likely than Mamardashvili. Newcastle have also been linked with Burnley’s James Trafford, who could be offered an immediate route back to the Premier League following relegation.
His arrival would probably be good news for Pope, as it would make him incredibly more likely to remain number one at St James’ Park for now. In contrast, you have to imagine a player like Mamardashvili would only make the move to the North East if he had guarantees that he would be an immediate starter.
But that move is now at risk, as Newcastle pay the price for not qualifying for Europe.
