Newcastle suddenly less interested in £80m player with two other deals ‘advanced’

Newcastle United look to be closing in on two summer signings already, which means another Toon target is not going to required.

Lloyd Kelly and Tosin Adarabioyo have been major targets for Newcastle United in recent weeks, and there has been a lot of noise about both players heading to St James’ Park.

There is hope that a deal for Kelly can be completed this week, while the Magpies are also in pole position to sign Tosin from Fulham, with the 26-year-old currently preferring a move to Newcastle over Manchester United.

Getting those two players so early in the summer would be great business, especially as they are both going to be free transfers. That is exactly what Newcastle United want in this PSR era, with Eddie Howe’s squad set to be massively boosted without barely spending a penny.

Newcastle United less interested in Jarrad Branthwaite now

That will give Newcastle more money to invest elsewhere, with the club wanting to sign a goalkeeper and a couple of attackers.

But it is highly unlikely that there will be a third centre-back addition, which means the Magpies will not be signing Jarrad Branthwaite from Everton.

According to iNews, Newcastle United’s interest in Branthwaite has ‘waned’ as of late, due to the fact that deals for Kelly and Tosin are now ‘advanced’.

They report that because Newcastle are optimistic about signing the Bournemouth and Fulham duo, they are unlikely to target the 21-year-old defender.

Newcastle are doing the right thing in the transfer market

It is a good job too, as Newcastle would probably have to use the majority of their budget to bring Branthwaite to the North East. iNews report that Everton have set an asking price of £80million, as they look to hold on to their talented youngster.

That is crazy money – a figure that would break Newcastle United’s transfer record. Branthwaite is a player that the Magpies like and have been linked with, but it has always looked like the asking price would be the issue.

Branthwaite was named as a player that Dan Ashworth wanted at St James’ Park, so the fact that Newcastle are looking elsewhere may also coincide with his departure to Manchester United. Interestingly, the Red Devils are in the mix to sign the Everton defender.

Meanwhile, the Magpies are using the free agent market. That is a much better decision, allowing Newcastle to beef up their defensive ranks without breaking the bank. If Kelly and Tosin do arrive, Newcastle will be getting two proven Premier League talents. In contrast, you would just be buying potential in Branthwaite.

Obviously he is a very talented player, but he only has one season of Premier League football under his belt. But he did so well that the cat is out the bag, meaning there was no chance of Newcastle getting a bargain.

It is the type of deal that Newcastle are always going to avoid, with Eddie Howe making it clear that the club needs to sign players before they truly burst onto the scene.

That is why a deal for Branthwaite is off the table, as Newcastle prepare to bring in Kelly and Tosin on frees instead.
