Despite movement in the transfer window, Newcastle seem no closer to signing a striker.
However, that move might be off. According to Sky Sports, Antonio Conte’s side are now looking to sign Fernando Llorente, which could end their pursuit of Giroud.
Llorente and Giroud are very similar strikers. They’re target men who can hold the ball up and bring other players into the game. Both men are in the twilight years of their careers and it’s very unlikely that Inter will want both.
So if Llorente is now their main target, Giroud will have to look elsewhere. The Frenchman is out of favour at Chelsea, and needs to get a move. With the European Championships coming up this summer, the 33-year-old will hope to be part of France’s squad.
But could Steve Bruce answer his prayers?
Joelinton has struggled up top, unable to cope physically and hold the ball up. That’s where Giroud excels. We’ve seen from his time at Arsenal and Chelsea that he’s excellent with his back to goal.
But he’s not just that. He’s a goalscorer too. Giroud has often been criticised for his goal return, but it always seemed harsh. He scored 13 goals for Chelsea last season, while he found the net more than 100 times in an Arsenal shirt.
Even at 33, Giroud has a lot to offer. He could help Joelinton improve, whilst also providing the goals that Newcastle so desperately need.
Bruce says he’ll only sign players who will improve his team, and Giroud is certainly one of those players.
