Newcastle United have sent scouts over to Italy to watch an exciting midfielder who has been breaking records this season.

Newcastle have suffered a bit of a midfield crisis this season and Eddie Howe will be keen to ensure that he doesn’t find himself in a similar situation next year.

A new report from GiveMeSport is claiming that Newcastle are one of several Premier League team to be keeping a close eye on Bologna midfielder Lewis Ferguson.

‘Incredible’ midfielder has done something special

Ferguson joined the Italian club from Aberdeen in 2022 after an impressive season in the Scottish Premiership where he managed to get into double figures for goals for the first time.

The midfielder enjoyed a promising start to life in Bologna during his first season and has now become captain of the first team, starting every Serie A game he’s been available for this season and racking up 11 goal contributions.

His tally for Bologna is now a new record for a Scottish player in Italy after overtaking Denis Law’s record which he set back in 1963 with Torino, and plenty of teams are taking notice.

Newcastle are joined by Aston Villa, Brentford, Fulham and Everton in their interest of the ‘incredible‘ midfielder who is expected to have a big role to play in the upcoming European Championships for Scotland this summer.

Newcastle to target a new midfielder in the summer

Newcastle’s biggest issue this season is that their midfielders, while having individual quality, are too similar in the way that they play with the team lacking a creative spark as well as a more defensive minded figure.

Bruno Guimaraes has again been excellent in his role while Joelinton and Joe Willock offer something unique to the team, but neither are particularly prolific going forwards.

Howe may be looking for more of a goal threat from his midfield and Ferguson has proven he has a keen eye for a goal as well as picking out a key pass to create a big chance.

However, Newcastle do not typically play with a traditional number 10 role in the team which could prove to be a bit of an obstacle when looking to sign the Scottish international.
