It appears that Newcastle United may be looking at bringing former Chelsea striker Tammy Abraham back to England after watching him bag a last-minute goal for AS Roma at the weekend.

Tammy Abraham left Chelsea to join Roma in 2021 for a fee of £34million, linking up with former boss Jose Mourinho in Italy. Now several Premier League clubs are said to be keeping tabs on the 25-year-old with Aston Villa seemingly most confident of landing the forward according to a report in 90min.

Since joining the Italian side, Abraham has scored 25 goals in Serie A, the latest of which came in the dying embers of the game against AC Milan at the weekend to rescue a point for Jose Mourinho’s side.

Abraham went from first choice at Chelsea to being sold to AS Roma

Abraham was a first-choice starter under Frank Lampard at Chelsea but Thomas Tuchel came in and that changed and Abraham felt it was time to go. It’s a mystery why Chelsea never had more faith in Abraham and let him go. I bet there’s a lot of regret in the halls of Stamford Bridge now seeing how well he’s doing and given that they have no recognised striker.

Newcastle are looking for more striking options this summer with just Alexander Isak and Callum Wilson as recognised strikers in the side and Abraham could be the answer. Eddie Howe is currently having to rotate the two to keep them injury-free, but would ideally love to be in a position to be able to play both together without the fear that if he loses one to injury he has no cover.

A young English striker with Champions League experience would be exactly the kind of player Howe is looking for, but Abraham as a pre-existing relationship with Aston Villa having bagged 25 goals for the Villains in their promotion season from the Championship while on loan from Chelsea.

Tammy Abraham could be exactly what Newcastle need next season

Villa would need to break their transfer record to land the forward according to 90min as he’s expected to cost £40million. That number shouldn’t be a problem for Newcastle and if they are serious about a move for the England striker, the might want to act fast and cut Villa off before they can make their move.

Tammy Abraham would be a quality signing for Newcastle and it could work well for the player too. Moving back to England, playing in the Champions League, he could get his way back into Gareth Southgate‘s thoughts for England as his form in Italy doesn’t seem to be catching the England manager’s attention.

For £40million it would be great business for the Magpies.
