Newcastle are reportedly interested in making a move for Miguel Almiron’s former Atlanta United strike partner Josef Martinez, according to a report in the Chronicle.
If Newcastle decide to firm up their interest, the MLS striker will have a number of players he can turn to for opinions on the club.
Both he and Almiron were integral to Atlanta’s success in the American top league, and he would surely only have positive things to say about Tyneside.
But Martinez is also a strike partner of former Toon loan man, and last year’s player of the season, Salomon Rondon, and although he did not make a permanent switch to St James’ Park, it would be likely he would talk of the club and fans in glowing terms.
Martinez has been in scintillating form in the MLS, with him currently on an incredible streak of scoring in 15 successive games.
Whatever league you play in, that is an incredible statistic, and it is sure to have caught the eye of some of Europe’s big-hitters.
Almiron could have big role in luring Martinez to Tyneside
But if Newcastle are seriously considering bringing the 26-year-old Venezuelan to the north east, they may well have an ace up their sleeve with Almiron.
The Paraguayan has struggled to find the net in England, and the prospect of linking up again with his former team-mate, could well also bring the best out of him.
It is still early days in the January transfer hunt, and many other names will be mentioned with a move to Newcastle, but Martinez is an intriguing option, and will be one for fans to keep an eye on in the coming weeks.
