Newcastle United are reportedly looking to sign Portuguese defender Jorge Fernandes next month.

According to a report from The Daily Mail, the Magpies are one of a few teams keen on the 23-year-old centre-half, with Fulham and Southampton also named as possible suitors.

The ball-playing star has been in impressive form for Vitoria Guimaraes, who are fifth over in Liga NOS with the joint-best defensive record with seven goals conceded in seven games.

When Fernandes has been on the pitch, Vitoria have shipped just two goals.

The 6ft 4in star was signed for just £720,000 only a few months ago, but is now being valued at around £16 million by Vitoria given his brilliant form.

Steve Bruce prides himself on having a solid defence, but in 2020/21 in the Premier League only five teams have conceded more than Newcastle’s 22 so far.

A potentially exciting Newcastle addition

Fernandes has definitely made a brilliant start for Vitoria.

With his imposing physique and ball-playing ability, he is very much tailored to Premier League football and could be a very exciting addition for Newcastle.

Federico Fernandez is not getting any younger and so the club have surely got to elbow the likes of Fulham and Southampton aside if they feel he is ready to make the jump.
