Newcastle are reportedly at the front of the queue to sign Ross Barkley in January.

That’s according to TeamTalk, who claim the Magpies lead the race ahead of Premier League rivals Leeds and Everton.

The midfielder has been heavily linked with a move to Newcastle in the past. There were even claims over the summer that Steve Bruce would make a move if Barkley became available.

Of course, Barkley didn’t come to St James’ Park, and the 27-year-old has featured more than he probably expected back at Stamford Bridge. Barkley spent last season on loan at Aston Villa, where he excelled to begin with before his form dipped.

The report adds that Barkley still has real hope of going to the 2022 World Cup in Qatar with England, having already played 33 times for his country. But can Newcastle help him achieve that dream?

Would Ross Barkley really sign for Newcastle?

There’s no doubt that he’d get the guaranteed minutes he craves at Newcastle. We desperately need to improve our midfield, and Barkley would be a wonderful option. He would add goals and creativity to an often uninspiring midfield.

He also carries a big goal threat. Newcastle know all about that, with Barkley scoring a stunning solo goal at St James’ Park back in 2014.

Some Toon fans were eager to see him arrive in the summer as an alternative to Joe Willock.

But while Willock has struggled since his Toon return, Barkley would arrive with a point to prove. If he could play a pivotal role in guiding Newcastle to safety then he’d have a good chance of making the England World Cup squad.

Barkley has often been a favourite of Three Lions boss Gareth Southgate, and a series of strong performances in black and white could win him an international return.

However, the last time a Newcastle player was involved with England was Andros Townsend back in 2016. Perhaps that could influence Barkley’s decision.

A return to Goodison Park might be much more appealing. Everton are stable in mid-table right now, and he has a history with the Toffees. Then again, he didn’t leave Everton on great terms.

So maybe a move to a fresh club is what Barkley needs. Financially, Newcastle would have no problem signing Barkley. But their league position might dictate the kind of deal they can do.

If the Magpies have somehow distanced themselves from the relegation zone by January, perhaps a permanent deal can be done. However, it is more likely that Eddie Howe’s side will remain in the race for survival.

Therefore a loan deal might be all Barkley wants. Will he want to risk dropping down into the Championship? That’s the issue Newcastle will face when trying to sign players in January.
