Newcastle are close to signing Queen’s Park’s Scotland Under-17 midfielder Reagan Thomson, according to the Daily Record, beating other English clubs, and both Celtic and Rangers to his signature.

The 16-year-old is rated highly and the report claimed Newcastle are set to pay a “substantial fee” for him, which will see the Magpies continue to build their youth squads.

Queen’s Park are an amateur club, and as such, do not usually receive transfer fees, but due to Thomson’s young age, they are entitled to compensation for their star youngster.

The report added that Newcastle have already opened talks with the Scottish League 2 side, in a bid to get the deal tied up.

Thomson has played in six of the Hampden Park side’s league games this season.

Newcastle continue to improve their academy squad

Newcastle have made a concerted effort to invest in players for their junior levels recently, with a number of talented additions being signed at academy and under-23 level.

Last season’s success of Sean Longstaff seems to have spurred the club into trying to unearth more stars of the future, and Sean’s feats have been matched by his brother Matty this season.

Their breakthrough will also be noted by agents of other young players, who may now see Newcastle as somewhere their clients will get a chance to make it into the senior set-up, if they show the potential.

Should a deal be finalised in the coming days, Thomson will sign officially in January.
