Newcastle are interested in signing Preston North End’s centre-back Ben Davies, according to the Sun, but Brighton are believed to be leading the race for his signature.
It is the second such link in the past week, with another report claiming Steve Bruce was looking at Nottingham Forest’s central defender Joe Worrall.
If the speculation is genuine, it suggests that Newcastle have a specific plan to target top, young talent from the Championship, as they look to build for the future.
Jarrod Bowen is another Championship star we have been heavily linked with, and while there is a glaring need for a right-winger to be signed, the same cannot necessarily be said for a centre-back.
Newcastle need to strengthen other positions ahead of a centre-back
With depth already at the position – which is likely to be reinforced by the imminent return of Florian Lejeune – there does not seem to be a need for further additions.
The report claimed that Graham Potter’s Seagulls are in pole-position for Davies – who has played every minute of Preston’s season so far – although Everton and Wolves are also interested, as well as Newcastle.
The defender made 41 appearances for Preston last season, and a fee of over £10 million will be sought from the Deepdale club, if one of the Premier League clubs firm up their interest.
It is a lot of money for a player untested in the top flight, but as we constantly say, he does fit the parameters of a Mike Ashley era signing.
It seems Newcastle would have an uphill task to lure either Davies or Worrall to Tyneside, and with the numbers they already have at the position, they would probably be better off looking to prioritise strengthening elsewhere in the squad.
