Newcastle officially miss out as Cody Gakpo agrees to sign for Liverpool

Newcastle United have been linked with signing Cody Gakpo in January, but are now officially set to miss out on signing the forward.

That is because he is going to join Liverpool – completely out of the blue.

As Toon fans celebrated a successful Boxing Day win over Leicester City and got stuck into the leftover turkey, the first big Premier League transfer for January was confirmed.

After excelling at the World Cup, Gakpo looked destined to secure a move away from PSV Eindhoven. That is now a reality, with Liverpool agreeing a deal to sign the 23-year-old.

Shortly after Jurgen Klopp’s side beat Aston Villa on their return to Premier League action, Liverpool fans got another Christmas surprise with news of a new signing.

Reports emerged that Gakpo was going to join Liverpool for an initial £37million, before PSV confirmed the deal themselves.

It is official – Gakpo is on his way to the Premier League. His heroics in Qatar have earned him a move, and it is Liverpool who are set to benefit from the talented attacker’s brilliance.

Newcastle miss out on Gakpo

The race to sign gakpo is seemingly over, and it has been won by Liverpool. And that is despite the fact that Manchester United were the favourites for his signature.

It was recently claimed by TalkSPORT that the Red Devils were determined to sign him in January – but that determination has led him to Anfield rather than Old Trafford.

That will be a serious blow to Erik ten Hag, and it will also disappoint Newcastle. Gakpo has been linked with a move to St James’ Park, with various outlets reporting on interest from Eddie Howe’s side.

The Chronicle claimed that Newcastle have been scouting him, the Mirror reported that the Magpies were serious contenders to sign him, and the Athletic added that Toon officials were impressed by him.

But now he is off to Liverpool. They have moved incredibly quickly to secure a deal before the window opens, and have stole a march on their Premier League rivals.

Only time will tell if he is a success in England, but Gakpo looks like someone who would have been a star at St James’ Park. Robin van Persie has previously said that Gakpo is ‘always dangerous‘, while his form for PSV has been staggeringly good.

It is a second January target that Newcastle have now missed out on, following news that Andrey Santos is off to Chelsea.
