Newcastle now lead race to sign 'special' player this summer

An insider at Manchester United has said that Newcastle United are at the front of the queue for midfielder Scott McTominay along with West Ham United.

According to The Sun, a source inside Manchester United says that Newcastle and West Ham lead the way to sign Scotland international Scott McTominay, but there are no shortage of other clubs interested.

The Manchester United insider has claimed that if Mason Mount was to arrive at Old Trafford that would likely force McTominay into a move, saying: “There are no shortage of clubs interested and although United are not necessarily keen to sell him, he is likely to try and push for a move to take the next step in his career.

McTominay could be a replacement for Rice at West Ham

“Newcastle and West Ham are at the front of the queue but Brighton could also be looking to bring in a midfielder and think they could use European football to tempt some bigger names this summer.”

Newcastle have been linked with McTominay for a while now and this has divided opinion amongst the fanbase. Some fans can see the potential in the 26-year-old while others don’t see him as an upgrade on what we already have.

However, other sources have claimed that McTominay is ‘special‘ and Diego Simeone even said he was “one of the best midfielders in the world“, so maybe we’re judging him too harshly.

Newcastle should go for Rice and leave McTominay to the Hammers

For me, it depends how high on the list of targets he is. As a last resort he could be a decent, if not inspiring addition, but if he’s near the top of the list of targets, I just don’t get it. Although, I defer to Eddie Howe and his scouting team’s judgement as they clearly know a lot better than I do what to look for.

West Ham are preparing for life without Declan Rice and they see McTominay as a someone who can fill that void.

Hopefully, it’s Newcastle who manage to land Rice and then West Ham can help themselves to McTominay – but I’m probably dreaming there.
