It now looks like Newcastle United are looking down the English football pyramid for fresh talent as they have been linked with Ronnie Edwards of Peterborough.

It’s not going to be all mega-money huge name signings this summer for Newcastle as the Magpies look to strengthen from top to bottom.

Dan Ashworth has set his sights on improving the playing staff at every level from the first team down to the kids which is why Newcastle are now said to be looking at 20-year-old Ronnie Edwards from League One Peterborough, according to The Sun.

Newcastle and three other Premier League clubs are keen on Edwards

Back in September, Dan Ashworth referred to Ronnie Edwards as a ‘Rolls Royce‘ and admitted he’d been very impressed with him after compiling a report when he was at Brighton.

As well as Ashworth being a huge fan, Newcastle aren’t alone in their interest of Edwards, who Darren Ferguson described as an ‘incredible talent‘ after facing Premier League-level strikers.

Crystal Palace, Bournemouth and Tottenham have all been keeping their eye on Edwards, with Palace and Bournemouth said to be ready to battle it out for his signature this summer.

The Eagles already tried to lure Edwards away from Peterborough last year but their £7.5million bid was rejected as Posh wanted closer to £10million.

Edwards was ever-present for England in the U20s World Cup

A year on, and after Edwards played every minute for England in the U20s World Cup, they’re likely to want even more, however, after missing out on promotion to the Championship, they may have to make do with what they can get.

So far Newcastle’s interest seems to be from afar, but once Bournemouth and Crystal Palace make their moves that may change.

With Harrison Ashby already at Newcastle, another young international alongside him in defence for the reserves would certainly be no bad thing, but as it stands it looks more likely he will end up at one of our Premier League rivals.
