Newcastle United have their eye on building the next generation of club legends while working on the current generation at the same time and are now looking at Derry Scherhant who is seen as one for the future.

One player that has apparently caught the eye of Newcastle‘s scouts is 20-year-old Hertha Berlin forward Derry Scherhant according to a tweet put out by Mike McGrath of The Telegraph.

McGrath’s tweet said: “Newcastle are interested in Hertha Berlin forward Derry Scherhant as an emerging talent. Same category as the Harrison Ashby signing – youngster with 1st-team experience. Scherhant, 20, made 10 Bundesliga appearances last season”

Scherhant would be signed as an ’emerging talent’ similar to Ashby

Scherhant scored one goal in those ten first-team appearances for Hertha in the Bundesliga. On top of that, he represented Hertha BSC II in the Regionalliga Nordost – Germany’s fourth tier which has a mix of professional and semi-professional players – In that competition, Scherhant made 12 appearances and scored eight goals, providing two assists.

The German youngster played as either an attacking midfielder and left-winger, but was also used on the right wing once or twice, however he’s classed as an attacking midfielder/centre forward. Scherhant’s versatility will be ideal for Newcastle.

It sounds like Garang Kuol could end up with some competition at Newcastle soon as both play similar positions.

I’d imagine, like Kuol, if Newcastle were to sign Scherhant this summer there’s a high likelihood that he’d spent next season out on loan.

Newcastle seem determined to revive the club below first-team level

While Newcastle fans twiddle their thumbs and pace around their living rooms waiting for a first-team signing, I like reading about these young players we have our eye on. The future is exciting at Newcastle now with owners who genuinely want the club to succeed at every level.

For too long we’ve neglected our reserves and youth set-up and despite some fantastic emerging talent and some shrewd signings since PIF came in, we’re still lagging behind other Premier League clubs.

Dan Ashworth is clearly making the right moves to put that right and it sounds like Derry Scherhant could be the next piece of the puzzle.
