Newcastle United’s scouts never switch off and as such are now looking at the next crop of players to bring into the fold and are currently looking at Valencia midfielder Javi Guerra.

According to a report in MARCA, Newcastle are said to be ‘closely monitoring’ 20-year-old Spanish U21 midfielder Javi Guerra of Valencia.

The report states that Manchester United are also keen on the youngster and a transfer battle between the two Premier League giants could be on the cards in January.

Guerra is having an outstanding season for Valencia so far

In the first six games of the season Guerra has bagged three goals and an assist for Valencia, continuing on from his impressive debut season which saw several clubs develop an interest.

MARCA highlight the fact that Valencia are in a position where they need to sell players to balance their books so there’s definitely a deal to be done.

Guerra played in the final 10 games of last season for Valencia, making his debut against Sevilla in mid-April. He went on to score his first goal just two games later against Real Valladolid where he came off the bench in the 89th minute and bagged the winner in stoppage time.

Valencia have used Guerra as a defensive midfielder mostly, but given his goals to game ratio this season it seems there’s clearly more to his game than protecting his back line.

Newcastle need a defensive midfielder and Guerra fits the bill

Newcastle have been looking for someone to play that number six role and in Javi Guerra they might have found someone who can fill that gap.

If Newcastle do decide to move for Guerra in January it’ll be interesting to see if he’s brought in for the development squad or if his La Liga experience will be enough for him to go into the first-team set up.

For me, given how he’s taken to life in La Liga I’d say he looks ready to take on the Premier League.
