Monday saw Newcastle United miss out on one teenage target, but secure the signature of another.
Jarrad Branthwaite has completed a move to Everton from Carlisle, despite the 17-year-old being a target for Newcastle.
During Elias Sorensen’s loan spell in Cumbria, the Shields Gazette reported that the Magpies had first refusal on Branthwaite. However, that deal must have been taken off the table when Sorensen was recalled to Newcastle, allowing Everton to nip in and sign the teenager.
While Newcastle have missed out on one young target, another has signed on the dotted line. Before Christmas there was a lot of talk about Reagan Thomson, with Newcastle challenging Celtic and Rangers for the Scottish teenager.
But the 16-year-old is now seemingly a Magpie, with Thomson confirming the move on his official Instagram account. The youngster posted a picture of himself in his new Newcastle training gear, simply writing: “Buzzing to have signed for Newcastle.”
Signed from Queen’s Park, the midfielder will hopefully be a future star for Newcastle. The Magpies have fended off strong competition, which should tell us a lot about his potential.
Matty and Sean Longstaff have proved that there is a path from the Newcastle academy to the first-team, and fingers crossed Thomson follows in their footsteps.
