Newcastle make shock loan move for Premier League star, player reluctant on move

Newcastle have made a shock approach for Tottenham Hotspur goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, with around two hours remaining in the transfer window.

The 36-year-old is expected to leave Spurs this summer after over a decade in North London, but no move has materialised so far, with one year remaining on his contract.

The Times has now reported that Newcastle have made an approach to take Lloris on loan, with Eddie Howe keen on adding another experienced goalkeeper to his roster, but the player has so far rejected the approaches from the Magpies.

Lloris has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, and if he does not leave before the transfer deadline he could have his contract terminated, as Spurs want to move on from him.

Martin Dubravka is currently the main backup to Nick Pope, but the report has also claimed that the 34-year-old is keen on a move away, which may have prompted the interest in Lloris.

Would Lloris be a good signing?

This is a very surprising move indeed, particularly when considering that Loris Karius extended his deal at the club this summer.

Despite the departure of Karl Darlow, Howe has four goalkeepers at his disposal in Pope, Dubravka, Karius and Mark Gillespie, and Lloris feels like an unnecessary addition, and he could be on a potentially high wage.

Lloris would bring a wealth of experience, with over a decade as Tottenham’s first-choice keeper, and a World Cup under his belt, but his performance levels dipped badly last season, and his reluctance to join perhaps indicates that he will want to move to a club where he can be the main option, rather than a backup.

Howe’s interest in Lloris perhaps stems from the lack of Champions League experience within his squad, but it seems unlikely that the Frenchman would feature in the competition, even if he agrees to a move.
