Newcastle United are looking to pick the bones of the Southampton squad that has been relegated from the Premier League, and are eyeing up a move for Carlos Alcaraz.
The 20-year-old has been watched by the Magpies, having impressed during his first few months in England. Alcaraz only joined Southampton in January, but his impressive performances mean he could be on the move again after just half a season.
He is one of multiple Southampton players Newcastle are looking it, with the likes of James Ward-Prowse, Romeo Lavia and Kyle Walker-Peters also linked.
Picking up the best relegated players is a sensible tactic from the Magpies, and it sounds like Toon officials have made their first move to possibly bring Alcaraz to St James’ Park.
Newcastle enquire about signing Carlos Alcaraz
According to 90min, Newcastle have made an enquiry about signing Alcaraz, who was recently described as ‘fabulous‘ by Owen Hargreaves.

It appears that the Magpies are testing the waters, as they take the first step towards potentially signing the Argentinian midfielder.
90min add that he could cost as much as £25million, which would mean Southampton doubling their money in less than a year. They signed Alcaraz for around £12million from Racing Club in January.
That would represent good business from Southampton, who appear to have plenty of saleable assets following their relegation to the Championship.
Alcaraz certainly falls into that category, and looked really impressive following his move from Argentina. He scored four goals and provided two assists, which is impressive in a poor Saints side.

That ability to score from midfield will appeal to Eddie Howe, who knows that his centre-midfielders need to chip in with more goals next season. That is why James Maddison is a major target – he can provide something different.
Alcaraz can do that too, but would be a much cheaper alternative. While he might not be a priority signing for Newcastle, he could be a smart option if other targets prove to be unattainable.
