Manchester United midfielder Jesse Lingard is reportedly set to leave Old Trafford this month, amid transfer links to Newcastle United.
The 24-cap England international has struggled for minutes this season, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer often overlooking him for matchday squads.
His appearance against Watford in the FA Cup at the weekend was only his third of the season, and talk has been increasing regarding his immediate future at the club.
According to Eurosport, Lingard ‘will make a move before deadline day’, with struggling Sheffield United apparently keen.
It’s explained that the 27-year-old is waiting to see what other opportunities arise.
Newcastle were linked with Lingard last summer (The Times), and 90min reported just last week that the Magpies were interested in three United players, including Lingard, Phil Jones and Brandon Williams.
Lingard loan might be worth a punt
If Lingard is available on loan this month then Newcastle could do worse.
There are plenty of better attacking midfielders in the division, but one gets the feeling that Lingard badly needs a change of environment.
St. James’ Park could be a fresh start for him, and he is a player who can operate between the lines and make things happen.
There will be some who will turn their nose up at Lingard, but getting him in on loan for the rest of the season surely can’t hurt.
