Newcastle United are believed to have made an approach to sign a very talented midfielder who is brilliant at free-kicks.
Newcastle have been fairly strong when it comes to set-pieces, so adding another quality player as an attacking threat could make them one of the best in the Premier League.
A new report from Il Bianconero has suggested that Newcastle submitted a bid of around £40m in January for Teun Koopmeiners but Atalanta require £51m to let him go.
Newcastle looking to sign ‘extraordinary’ midfielder this summer
By now we’re all aware that Newcastle’s midfield is the weakest part of their game at the moment with Joe Willock, Joelinton, Sandro Tonali and Elliot Anderson all unavailable for selection.
While they will have enough bodies when everyone returns to the team, Eddie Howe is still keen to add to his quality in depth for next season after what feels like a cursed campaign with injuries this year.
Newcastle will likely be looking for a more traditional holding midfielder after missing out on Kalvin Phillips who moved to West Ham, and in every game it’s glaringly obvious they are desperate for someone in the position.
Bruno Guimaraes, Sean Longstaff and Lewis Miley are quality in their own rights, but none fit that style and it’s been a case of putting square pegs in round holes recently, leaving big gaps in every game.

Newcastle hoping to add free-kick specialist
Koopmeiners has been so threatening from free-kicks all throughout his career and it’s something that Newcastle could really add to their attack, especially with Kieran Trippier not having scored since the beginning of last season.
One free-kick that sticks out in particular from Koopmeiners was for the Netherlands at the World Cup when he took Argentina’s defence by surprise by quickly sliding in Wout Weghorst in the box to score a last minute equaliser.
Koopmeiners also slotted away his penalty in the shootout that followed despite his team being knocked out by the eventual winners of the tournament.
It’s that kind of creativity that Newcastle have been lacking as of late with things looking a little bit stale and perhaps in need of some fresh ideas.
