Newcastle United fans have been reacting in their hundreds to a shock claim that Gennaro Gattuso is a managerial target.
The claim has come from Calciomercato, who say the Magpies’ interest was tabled earlier today.
Gattuso has been the head coach of Napoli since December 2019, which is when the club parted company with Carlo Ancelotti, who is now the manager of Everton of course.

Gattuso has done a pretty decent job at Napoli so far – he won the Coppa Italia last season, and is hoping to secure a top four finish this term.
At present, they are fifth but are only a couple of points adrift of Atalanta in second.
Barring the worst kind of collapse, Newcastle will be retaining their Premier League status for 2021/22.
It is very difficult to imagine Mike Ashley sacking Steve Bruce given the faith he has shown in him during some very tough times in recent months.

Bruce is probably also unlikely to walk away, having previously talked up his intention to see out his contract, which expires next year.
So on the face of it, Gattuso becoming the manager of Newcastle in the coming months does seem fairly unlikely.
Fans have been discussing the hypothetical situation on social media.
It appears that a lot would love to see him brought in as a replacement for Bruce and light a fire beneath the players:
