Newcastle United are reportedly considering a transfer for Rennes striker Gaetan Laborde.

According to Homme du Match, the Magpies are looking to bolster their attacking options and could make a move for the Frenchman.

Laborde, 27, has enjoyed a tremendous start to the 2021/21 season so far.

He only joined Rennes in the summer from Montpellier, but has immediately hit the ground running.

He’s made 17 appearances so far this season, and scored 11 goals.

He had also scored three times for Montepellier before changing clubs.

In Ligue 1, only Jonathan David has scored more than him, meaning he’s even ahead of PSG superstar Kylian Mbappe.

Rennes could entertain interest in the player if they receive a ‘non-refusable’ offer.

Supposedly, they would want at least double what they paid Montpellier. That was around €15 million/£12.7 million (via GFFN).

News of Newcastle’s interest comes amid claims Dwight Gayle could be set to leave in January.

The star has made just four appearances so far this term, only one of which has been a start.

Newcastle hand Callum Wilson good cover and competition with Gaetan Laborde transfer

Newcastle completing a transfer for Gaetan Laborde – described as ‘a rather complete centre-forward’ by GFFN – could be a good move.

The star clearly has a keen eye for goal, and he is also versatile enough to feature in wide positions.

While defenders are paramount in January, the new Newcastle owners would be doing right by adding another forward.

Gayle just isn’t good enough, and Joelinton is now being used more in the wide areas and also deeper.

Callum Wilson could do with someone to come in and share the burden.
