Newcastle United will be in the market for blockbuster signings this summer, but not every addition will be with the Champions League in mind.

Eddie Howe needs a stronger squad, but his recruitment team are also making plans for the future. That is why the club’s scouts are still scouring the globe for young players with the potential to develop into first-team regulars.

Newcastle have scouts all over the world, but their latest youth target comes from north of the border.

According to the Daily Record, Newcastle are interested in Celtic left-back Mitchel Frame.

Frame is a 17-year-old defender who recently helped the Hoops beat Rangers in the Scottish Youth Cup final. He has also impressed on the international stage for Scotland Under-17s.

The report states that Newcastle have been tracking him closely, with Crystal Palace and Brighton also keen. Interest from Brighton is certainly intriguing, as their youth recruitment is normally on the money.

It is something that the Magpies are hoping to replicate, but a deal for Frame will come at a cost. The Daily Record add that because the teenager still has two years left to run on his contract, it will take a hefty offer for Celtic to consider selling him.

This is the second Scottish left-back from Celtic’s academy that Newcastle have been linked with this summer. The first was Kieran Tierney, who started his career at Celtic Park before making the move to Arsenal.

He is a player who would immediately walk into Newcastle’s first-team, but a deal for Frame would be with an eye towards the future. He is a young man with a lot of potential, and the Toon recruitment team will hope he can realise it if they are able to do a deal.
